August 2023 - All Over Everything

I keep a document with stimulus for songs - they might be concepts I'm interested in, quotes from things I've read or, most frequently, phrases I think of that I like and think might work in a song some day. I had a few thoughts grouped together that I used in this song, a love song (what else!)

One sub-theme emerged as I wrote these words. I've always been grabbed by the line in Thunder Road "you ain't a beauty but hey you're alright" - I remember thinking as a kid "you can't say that!", it just didn't fit in my concept of what love was meant to sound like in a song. Of course, I realise now what a great lyric it is (in a brilliant song) and how love sounds many different ways.

It was clear from the first draft that this wasn't going to be a SONIDO song. My initial recording was just electric guitar and voice, but it felt like the kind of song that could really come alive with the right layers of colour and texture. Lucky me that I can turn to my live-in producer threethree45 (a.k.a. Hugo) to tap into a whole world of sounds and feels that are out of my reach and create something really special. This is our first release as a partnership, I'm sure it won't be the last.

Colouring life in the lines

Feeling or following, it blurs

All that I know is mine

But all that I am is hers

Look what you did

Without any warning

Filled me to the brim . . with love

Now it’s all over everything

You were the best kind of surprise

Like jasmine in July

Vibing in front of my eyes

With the frequency awry

Look what you did

Filled me up with love

Now it’s starting to spill

All over everything

I’ve never been more in love with you

But, to be fair,

I’ve rarely been less in love with you

Don’t think it some kind of air

Look what you did

Without any warning

Filled me to the brim . . with love

Now it’s all over everything
